Hot & Cold Feed Extruders

Extruders for Rubber Applications

Farrel offers a wide range of extruders for the rubber industry which are custom designed for each specific application. Complete extrusion systems include extrusion die head and discharge systems. Modularity of the components permits flawless integration with both batch and continuous mixers. A variety of customized discharge heads are available for straining, calender feeding and pelletizing applications. Extruder size, length, screw profile, power and speed are selected as functions of the compound viscosity range at the typical processing temperature.

Hot Feed Extruders

Farrel designs and manufactures extruders that receive the hot rubber compound from a batch mixer system, a continuous mixer or in the form of a strip coming from a mill. For batch mixer fed applications, the typical extruder sizes fall in the range of 6” (150 mm) to 24” (600 mm) screw diameters.

Cold Feed Extruders

For cold strip feed, the extruder sizes offered range from 3 ½” (90 mm) up to 12” (300 mm) including straight, vented and pin barrel extruders.

Pin Barrel Extruders

Pin Barrel Extruders are utilized for the production of tread lines and tires, profiles hoses, cable and sheets. The variably placed pins, arranged in a radial pattern around the screw, provides effective stream splitting of the compound material without excessive compound temperatures.

Hose/Tube Extrusion

Farrel offers complete lines for industrial and automotive applications, featuring single and dual layer extrusion heads, with an option for textile reinforcement.

Profile Extrusion

Farrel extrusion technology has a variety of applications with proven performance in automotive applications such as, door frame weather-stripping.

Extruders for Plastic Applications

Farrel offers a wide range of extruders for the plastics industry which are typically custom designed for each specific application. Farrel manufactures primarily extruders that receive polymer as a hot melt coming from a reactor vessel, batch or continuous mixer system. For general compounding applications the extruder sizes range from 2” as smallest model for pilot line or laboratory usage to a 15” model with a 10 to 15 mt/h capacity. However for a polyolefin production plant, reactor fed applications the extruder size can be as large as 26”.

Based on polymer type and viscosity range at the prevailing processing temperature extruder size, length, screw profile, power and speed area all predicted by computer modeling. The extruder assembly can includes a number of special features such as hopper cylinders to accommodate the size and shape of the feed material, standard vacuum vented forward cylinder and different mixing sections if needed for the screw. The extruder is completed with a head assembly that can include a screen changer, pelleting system or other type of discharge head configuration as needed to feed downstream equipment.
